We are pleased to share the news that professor Dimitris Krallis, Director of the SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies, has had his book, Βίος και πολιτεία ενός βυζαντινού μανδαρίνου: Το Βυζάντιο ιδωμένο αλλιώς, published by Alexandria. The publication is an updated and translated version of his monograph, Serving Byzantium's Emperors: The Courtly Life and Career of Michael Attaleiates. New Approaches to Byzantine History and Culture Series, published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2019.

Michael Attaleiates was a state official and historian in eleventh-century Byzantium. As a judge and courtier, Attaleiates participated in some of the most significant historical events of that century and in the political and cultural development of the Medieval Roman polity known as Byzantium.

In the Greek edition of Krallis' monograph, readers will also find reconstructed images of Attaleiates' signet ring and monastic complex drawn by Greek graphic artist Chrysavgi Sakelaropoulou, the illustrator of Theophano: A Byzantine Tale. The collaboration process between the artist and historian has been shared in the most recent volume of the Agora from pages 16 to 19

To learn more about Professor Krallis' latest publication, listen to an interview (in Greek) on the Lifo Books and Authors podcast hosted by Nikos Bakounakis. You can also listen to his 2019 interview (in English) with professor Anthony Kaldellis on the Byzantium & Friends podcast.

Dimitris Krallis is the director of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies and a professor in the Department of Humanities at SFU. His research explores the social, political, economic and intellectual history of Byzantium, as well as its modern reception.
