Embarking on the Practice of Kilim Weaving in Geraki
During their visit to Geraki, students from UCLA, SFU, and UBC were granted a remarkable opportunity to immerse themselves in the art of kilim weaving. Under the guidance of skilled artisans, they wholeheartedly embraced the captivating process, weaving on upright looms using wool yarn.
The traditional upright looms in Geraki, served as the conduit for creating magnificent, straight rugs and kilims. Filled with enthusiasm, the students embarked on their weaving journey, eagerly absorbing the wisdom and techniques passed down through generations.
As they dedicated themselves to the craft, the students aspired to attain mastery by unraveling the intricacies of the practice and exploring the enchanting rhythm that accompanies each thread. Their journey deepened their understanding of the immense skill and precision required to produce kilims of exceptional quality.
In addition to the technical aspects, the students also discovered the communal nature of weaving in Geraki. They listened to traditional songs that accompany the weaving process, adding a dimension of self-expression and fostering social connections among the women of Geraki.
The students recognized that weaving was not only an art form but also an opportunity for personal expression and meaningful interactions within the community. They treasured the moments of shared creativity and the songs that echoed the spirit of Geraki’s weaving traditions.
Through their weaving endeavors, the students not only honed their skills but also experienced the vibrant tapestry of culture, self-expression, and socializing that is the art of weaving in Geraki.
