It might not yet feel like spring in Vancouver, but spring activities are well under way at the SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies! We have a line up of exciting events taking place throughout the month of March, including this week! Read all about it in this issue of our monthly digest.
Stavros Niarchos Foundation Internship Opportunity in Greece

MA student Tiffany VanWinkoop accepted to Wisconsin-Madison for PhD
This fall, SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies graduate member and MA student, Tiffany VanWinkoop, plans to pursue her PhD in the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison! Tiffany will study a Byzantine ceremonial text from the 14th century to uncover the power dynamics that existed between the emperor, the court and the patriarch in Constantinople and beyond! She will do so under the supervision of Byzantine historian, professor Leonora Neville. Learn more about Tiffany's journey from Health Sciences student to Byzantinist in our latest news story.
Is There a Future for the West?
Tomorrow, join associate professor Roman Gerodimos from Bournemouth University for the fifth annual Edward and Emily McWhinney Memorial Lecture! This year's lecture will consider the future role of NATO for European security and the transatlantic alliance, highlighting the role of values as the key to the survival, not just of intergovernmental organizations such as NATO, but also of Western liberal democracies in general.
Deterrence: A Film Screening and Interview with Roman Gerodimos
Looking forward to our McWhinney lecture? Then we recommend attending our second event with associate professor Roman Gerodimos this month. In collaboration with the Department of Political Science, the Centre will be hosting an interview between assistant professor James Horncastle and associate professor Roman Gerodimos, following a film screening of Gerodimos' latest documentary, "Deterrence".
Conspiratorial Mood of Plato's Republic
At the end of March we will virtually host Demetra Kasimis, assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago, for her presentation on Athenian fears of secret power and revolution in Plato's Republic.
