The month of January seemed to pass by in a blur! But not to worry, we have plenty more exciting events and initiatives to share with you as we head into the second month of 2020.

February 7, 2020: “Performing Politics, Embodying Resistance in Greece, 1955 to 2015: From Melina Mercouri to Yanis Varoufakis" by Vangelis Calotychos

This week we are fortunate to host Dr. Vangelis Calotychos, Visiting Associate Professor of Comparative Literature from Brown University. Join us on Friday, February 7th, at 2:30PM in AQ 6229, to hear Dr. Calotychos present his research on the role of Greek cinema in the politics of (performative) resistance. After the seminar, we will decamp to Club Ilia to continue the discussions over pizza, courtesy of the SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies and the Department of World Literatures and Languages. Visit our events page for the rest of the series' line-up.

March 19, 2020: “Charismatic Leadership and its Discontents: The Case of Greece" featuring Harris Mylonas for the fourth annual Edward and Emily and McWhinney memorial lecture

The fourth annual Edward and Emily McWhinney Memorial Lecture will take place on Thursday, March 19th at 7pm in the SFU Segal Building in downtown Vancouver and will feature Associate Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, Dr. Harris Mylonas from the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University. His lecture, entitled: “Charismatic leadership and its discontents: the case of Greece” will focus on the lives of two former political leaders - Andreas Papandreou and Constantine Karamanlis - and their lasting legacy on Greece’s political landscape. 

March 20, 2020: Free screening and discussion of Harris Mylonas' documentary "Searching for Andreas: Political Leadership in Times of Crisis"

Dr. Mylonas will also be screening his independent documentary, "Searching for Andreas: Political Leadership in Times of Crisis" on the political life and legacy of Andreas Papandreou as part of a graduate seminar on Friday, March 20th at 2:30pm in room AQ6229 on SFU's Burnaby campus, in collaboration with SFU's Department of Political Science.

Postdoctoral fellowship announced for 2020 / 2021

If you completed your Ph.D. within the past four years and are pursuing Hellenic topics in the fields of humanities and social sciences, we want to work with you! Applications are now open for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship beginning September 2020 dedicated to the themes of Hellenisms Past and Present, Local and Global. More information can be found on our employment page. Applications received by March 1st, 2020, will be given priority.

Applications open for fall 2020 internship at SNF Athens

Interested in the possibility of exploring a career in the non-profit sector? We might have the perfect opportunity for you. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation has once again reserved an internship position for an SFU student beginning this fall at their Athens office. International Greek Language Day, February 9th

The Rebooting the Greek Language project team has been hard at work preparing a special surprise to mark this year's International Greek Language Day on February 9th. Congratulations Mete Oguz!

Lastly, we are pleased as punch that one of our PhD students, Mete Oguz, successfully passed his comprehensive exams during the first few weeks of January! Mr. Oguz’s research focuses on the social and economic history of the Middle Byzantine Period, under the supervision of the Centre's director, Dr. Dimitris Krallis. Congratulations!
