Event Description
On 23 June 2016, the majority of British people voted to leave the EU, arguably the most important political decision taken in the British Isles since the end of the Second World War. Was it an accident long waiting to happen or the result of the populist surge in an era of globalization and widening inequalities? Can the UK afford to cut itself loose from the rest of the European continent? Or, will membership be replaced by a new special relationship yet to be defined? In recent years, the EU has been through a major crisis of its common currency, the euro, as wells as a refugee crisis; and now comes Brexit. Can European integration overcome internal divisions in an adverse external environment? And if not, what would be the implications for Europe and the rest of the world?
