Areas of interest

The Little Ecology Group uses fieldwork, experiments, synthesis, and theory to examine the structure and function of communities and ecosystems in space. With a community ecology perspective, we consider how communities of organisms assemble, how organisms of similar and different trophic groups interact, and how their traits and activity contribute to ecosystem processes. We further consider material flows among ecosystems - both those driven by organismal movement and activity, and by passive abiotic processes - and how these affect the functioning of recipient ecosystems. Our work is often anchored in watersheds, but spans aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems from temperate biomes into the Arctic and considers a range of focal taxa.
