BISC members sweep Faculty of Science Excellence in Teaching Awards!
Congratulations to Erin Barley, Miranda Meents, Mikhaela Ong and Daniel Pelletier, recipients of the Faculty of Science Excellence in Teaching Awards for the 2023-2024 academic year!
The Faculty of Science Teaching Award commemorates and acknowledges instructors and teachers who go above and beyond in the classroom, creating positive that support and encourage students to learn, explore, and engage with the world. To have, not one, but four BISC members win this award is a great privilege, and speaks to the expertise and passion of all winners.
FACULTY TEACHING AWARDS (Honorarium of $1000)
Erin Barley (Biological Sciences)
Dr. Barley is recognized for her use of innovative teaching approaches, her development of multiple teaching resources, and her mentorship of sessional and limited term lecturers. In addition, she continues to show educational leadership at the departmental level as the department's Associate Chair.
EARLY CAREER TEACHING AWARD (Honorarium of $1000)
Miranda Meents (Biological Sciences)
Dr. Meents employs evidence-based pedagogies and alternative grading to create engaging and innovative teaching methods. She is recognized for her efforts to incorporate traditional Indigenous knowledge in her teaching. Dr. Meents also shows educational leadership within SFU, with the Teaching Matters seminar series and beyond as Director of the Education Committee of the Canadian Society of Plant Biologists.
GRADUATE STUDENT TEACHING AWARDS (Honorarium of $500)
Mikhaela Ong (Biological Sciences)
Mikhaela's knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for teaching are evident in the efforts she takes as a Biological Sciences Teaching Assistant and one-on-one mentor, working with undergraduate students to improve their learning experiences.
Daniel Pelletier (Biological Sciences)
Daniel makes outstanding contributions as a Biological Sciences Teaching Assistant, creating a safe, collaborative space for learning and making complex topics easier to understand.
