Successful Learning

Successful Learning Environment
Whether engaged in playing video games or not, all types of students can benefit from the good teaching and learning strategies found in video games (Gee, 2003). As with all learning, in order for it to be successful, a number of things must be realized. These include:

  1. Even if the learner has reason to be afraid, they must be convinced to try.
  2. Persuading a good deal of effort from the learner must happen even when there is little motivation to begin with.
  3. Some meaningful accomplishment must take place when the learner has applied effort.
  4. If things are too easy or too hard, the learner will not want to put in effort (Gee, 2003, pp.61-62).

This is a straight forward concept that applies to both the gaming world and education in general. If a child is not motivated or carries negative previous experiences creating low self esteem, it is unlikely they will be able to learn.

Multimodalities
Once the motivational environment has been established, a learner's multimodalities must be utilized. The sculpting of knowledge is done through a variety of modes which access students' diverse ways of learning. As Jewitt and Kress (2003, p.3) point out, "different aspects of meaning are carried in different ways by each mode." This means a combination of different modes in various utilizations must be used in order to afford a high level of connected understandings. Gaming provides a concentrated level of modalities thereby optimizing the potential for learning.
