Tasks
You have been provided with a computer model of part of the SW external
wall of the Richards house
(see Resources). The model shows the concrete
slab, the steel corner columns and the LVL beams at
first floor level, but does not include the stud framing, the internal
plasterboard lining or the external ply
cladding. (It also does not show the elements of the house in 3D such
as the floor joists which are
necessary to provide lateral stability.)
- Design a timber-framed glazed door to suit the Richards house.
- Show how this door would be placed in the wall.
- Complete the model by adding the stud framing, the internal lining
and the external ply cladding,
and add the door. The stud layout must take into account the location
of the door.
- Annotate your model.
You will need to design / select the following elements:
- the timber door frame: consider its placement in relation to wall
lining and cladding, and identify
timber type and section.
- timber-framed glazed door: identify timber type, style and rail
sizes and sections, and glass type
and thickness.
- hinges: identify type, material, number and position.
- door handle: design (manufacturer and catalogue number) and height.
- other fittings and trims: door stop, door seal, architraves, beads
etc..
Consider
- the location of the door in relation to both the interior of the
building and its external modelling.
- the hanging of the door (swing inwards or outwards, hanging L or
R).
You may also choose to consider the following aspects:
- weather shelter to the door opening.
- insulation to the stud wall.
- lock and latch for the door.
