Studying in Canada

Can I travel outside of Canada while my study permit extension is in process?

Leaving Canada while your study permit extension is under processing will not cancel your study permit extension application.  With that being said, there are important to considerations to keep in mind when it comes to your ability to re-enter Canada and to continue studying at SFU.

Depending on your country of citizenship(s) you may require a valid travel visa (temporary resident visa/TRV) or travel authorization (electronic travel authorization/eTA) to return to Canada.

* Visit the IRCC website to check whether you require a TRV or an eTA to travel to Canada.

When you enter Canada, you must have a valid status document (study permit) in order to continue your studies in Canada.

If you re-enter Canada while under maintained status (e.g. your study permit extension has not yet been approved and your current study permit has expired), you will not be able to continue studying in Canada until you receive your new or extended study permit.  You also will not be allowed to continue working on and/or off campus in Canada until you receive your new or extended study permit and meet IRCC's work eligiblity requirements for study permit holders.

For more information on maintained status, please refer to our FAQ: Can I continue staying in Canada after I submit my study permit extension application?
