REEL 65 COMMENTARY
1. Initially it is quiet, a long pause in action (until 1'15"), perhaps to clean rink of debris. The following events are specific acoustic events: 0'45" cavalry charge (trumpet) and crowd. 1'15" lull. 1'25" some action. 1'30" goal! 2'45" boos, tools, etc. 3'15" penalty announcement. 3'50" organ tunes (to 6'35"). 7'40" first "ooh!" after long halt in action. 8'20" charge call again. 10'00" more organ interlude. 12'05" last minute of play announcement. 13'05" tango theme. 13'45" countdown to end of game. 13'55" cheers, etc., more organ interlude, trumpets. 15'15" 3 star selection (NormUlman = 98 dBA, Doug Wilson = 100 dBA, Paul Henderson = 99 dBA. Sound levels refer to crowd cheers and applause after every name!)
2. Recordists walking out of rink into foyer/escalator area. Starts with loud organ moozak in very reverberant space. Nice ambience change into foyer filled with a crowd (1'15"). No more moozak. Movement through crowd is difficult to hear. Crowd is getting denser toward end of take.
3/4. Postgame hubbub, salesman's voice in background. General crowd sound.
5. Of all the traffic ambiences this (and take 6), being Saturday night, downtown, has the most voices and people sounds (wise cracks mostly). Ticking pattern is from traffic light regulator. At 0'45" somebody calls out "Yonge St." At 4'10" triple decker horn exchange.
6. Same Saturday night ambience. Car horn (0'08"), brakes and tires (0'15"), car horn (0'40"), ding and swish of streetcar (0'45") , "do you want me to jaywalk?" (0'50") , "a geiger counter" (1'05" referring to recordists' machine), hot rodder 1'20"), ding and swoosh of another streetcar (1'25"). Very busy ambience.
7. No moozak here, just people sounds (some more wise cracks), chairs scraping, some fan noise in back, cups and cutlery. People laughing, generally sociable atmosphere.
8. Begins with people laughing and fooling around. Some nice ambience change (0'15") from reverberant to dry right by turnstiles. Movement of recordists is not audible. Turnstiles (1'20"), recordists move onto platform, young guy telling an outlandish driving story (2'45"), his audience responding.
