REEL 64 COMMENTARY
1. Recordists buying something for their sweet tooth.2. Begins with subway information from a TV set [Pure "1984" atmosphere]. Then entering station. Clank of turnstiles (1'00"); short tap dance (1'50" -- your guess is as good as ours about this!). At 2'20" "ding" and the train arrives. Recordists enter train, interesting change in ambience (3'00"), conductor's whistle, train leaves. Listen to the heavy low frequencies! Some voices trying to cut through. First stop (4'30"), next stops (6'00" and 7'25"). Some parts during train ride distorted.
3. Recordists leave subway train (0110"); conductor's whistle (0'10", 2'24"); standing on platform as train leaves (0'30") and second train arrives (1'15"). Short silence (1'45"-1'55"). Train arrives and leaves (2'10"-2'45"). Longer silence (3'10" to end of take). Incredible roar when trains arrive and leave. In silences between trains one can hear people's voices.
4. Broadband hum with clatter of escalator. Turnstile clatter (0'30"), footsteps going upstairs (0'50").
5. Good change in ambience from inside, walking upstairs (lots of footsteps) to incredible outdoor low frequency traffic roar.
6. Recorded at ice level, close to boards, surrounded by people, action, cheers, whistles, applause, boos, airhorns, trumpet and organ. These three following takes are amazing: big game, big crowds, big sounds. Specific acoustic events in this take are as follows: 1'55", 2'10", 2'40" "boos and raspberries". 3'20" close voices. 3'40" distant kids' voices. 4'05" sticks. 4'25" short organ interlude.
7. Also recorded at ice level. The following are specific acoustic events standing out in general ambience: 0'10" cheer, recordists change levels. 0'30" boos, "raspberries" and tools. 0'55" organ playing for home team, clapping. 1'25" it worked: GOAL! 1'50" goal credit announcement and idle remark "All I do is stick up these guys." 2'15" crash of boards. 3'45" cavalry call. 4'25" last minute of play in period announcement. 4'35" short sharp "ooh" from crowd. 5'00" another goal. 5'30" goal announcement. 6'10" period ends, organ interlude, p.a. announcements. 7'00" close voices passing by microphones. 8'25" organ resumes; ice machine appears.
8. Recorded from higher up in the press box, overlooking everything, more distant acoustic perspective. The following are specific acoustic events in general ambience: 0'10" typewriter in background, p.a. announcement. 0'35" organ tune; warming up for last period. 1'40" organ version of cavalry call and crowd response. 2'00" period begins? 4'10" sequence of short cheers, then toot and organ doodle. 5'50" boos etc., organ, clapping to "Bridge on River Kwai". 9'10" organ doodle. 10'00" nice crowd crescendo. 10'45" tired cavalry call and crowd answering. 11'40" large pair of lungs bellowing. 11'55" organ doodle and crowd clap.
