REEL 67 COMMENTARY

General Remarks: This is an old wagon and dolly manufacturing company; the recordists are taken around by Bob Levett, manager (and uncle of one of the recordists), to one or two places of interest in the factory.

1. An old electric motor used to drive an old metal-bending apparatus (called a "bulldozer"). Cranking begins (0'30"). The rhythms make interesting patterns (1'10"). Machine slows down (3'00").

2. Very short, not great.

3. Conversation about what it took to get the machine going when it was run by steam.

4. Extremely hi-fi environment, muted wooden ambience. The continuing narrative and conversation with Mr. Levett is good. He seems deeply rooted to this place, He pulls up floorboards later in take (3'00"), to show the swirling flow over the unused water wheel. Microphones focus in on water sound (3'55"), and the sound is dark, beautiful.

5. The conversation centres on some other older factory operations.

6. Interesting metal-clangy sound, continuous, quite beautiful!

7. Machine gets turned on, stays on; something else gets turned on half-way through take, masks Buffalo Iron Worker. Sudden cut at end.

8. Machine starts, stays on and stops: beautiful ending with a very long shut-off cycle, very long "lyrical" fade.

9. Not very interesting.

10. Mostly footsteps and talk about sounds of company. Nice change of ambience into office.

11. A jolly guide of the print shop. Lots of jokes. Good clear recording of old printing machinery (3'20"). Microphone levels change (3'20"-4'10") for printing press. This old press seems to talk -- or, at least, say the same word over and over. Press stops at 5'10", conversation starts, moving over to linotype, moving away (7'50"), then conversation, with machine in background. Good contrasting sound of contemporary printing technology, a new IBM typesetter (10'00"), with old linotype in background. Linotype stops (11'15"), IBM "solo" til end.

12. Most of the conversation masked by one of the machines.
