REEL 12 COMMENTARY
1. Blacksmith has a very powerful voice, and a strong Slavic accent. He begins making a chisel (3'35" to 16'40"). Blacksmith describes working process throughout, i.e., gives the listener a perfect acoustic experience of his workshop (it is a soundwalk). Details of chisel making: starting fire (1'30"); hammering (7'25"); fire (9'30"-10'20"); hammering (10'25"); hot metal into water (11'40"); grinding (12'20"-15'25"); fire (15'45"); hot metal into water (16'15"); testing of tool (16'40"). Demonstration of other tools (blacksmith turns on machines and explains their use and usefulness). Postdrill (17'00"), has an interesting rhythm, a bit like a spinning wheel.2. Propane torch, loud and hollow sound; air compressor (2'40") with a tock-tock motor; dider machine (4'10"); cutting torch (7'55"); air compressor (10'45"); welding apparatus (12'5O"); welding (15'00"); note sparkly sound and accompanying hum -- quite beautiful.
3. Recorded from inside blacksmith shop. Just before siren starts, cat meows quietly. Note long decay of siren. Some clattering and kitchen sounds at end.
