REEL 13 COMMENTARY

1. Blacksmith again explains while he is demonstrating various machines. Bandsaw (1'05"-2'35"), middle frequency range that is hard to take, it is one of the loudest machines in the shop, besides the torch; threading machine (3'20"-4'10"); cat meowing quietly (4'45") in silent ambience; lathe has a variety of sounds while in operation (6'15"-9'05"); also varies in loudness and character because recordist is moving around it -- good recording.

2. Unidentified machine, short, useless take.

3. Note extremely quiet ambience. No low frequencies except for the occasional short rumble from wind on microphone. The wind consists of high frequency rustling. During stronger gusts wind sings and whistles quietly around some unidentified object (fence? wires?). Car passing (4'45"-5'10"); geese flying overhead (8'45"-9'50").

4. Pump has a nice typical squeak, can't hear water running.

5. Recordist moved closer and running water audible. Very quiet ambience, but note wind in background. Seemingly at regular intervals pump makes a clattering noise. Good take.

6,7. Very active and loud work ambience.
