Chad Day
Chad Day passed away on January 11, 2024. Chad was appointed as the founding Director of REM in 1979 and retired as professor emeritus in 2001.
Chad’s leadership and vision were instrumental in creating and building REM into a world leading interdisciplinary program in resource and environmental management. Chad was considered a kind and supportive colleague by those who worked with him, and he was instrumental in fostering the respectful and collegial environment that has characterized REM from its beginnings to the present day.
Chad had a PhD from the University of Chicago specializing in water resources and natural hazards and had established himself as one of the leading international experts on environmental impact assessment and water and land management. He was past Director of the International Association for Impact Assessment, a director of the Canadian Coastal Engineering and Science Association, chair of the Greater Vancouver Regional District Advisory Committee and an expert panel member for many environmental assessment reviews. He had published over 100 refereed articles and books and held many prestigious research scholarships and awards.
Those wishing to acknowledge Chad’s legacy may make a contribution to the Chad Day Endowment Fund which he established to support REM student research.
