Student Research Showcase 2022
The School of Public Policy's 4th annual Student Research Showcase took place–after a two-year pause–on Thursday, May 19 at SFU Vancouver campus.
The Student Research Showcase is an after-work gathering hosted by the SPP grad caucus to showcase a diverse range of Capstone and BC Priorities projects. The student presenters were on site and discussed their project posters with guests, including MPP alumni, research partners, senior administration, BCP and Co-op partners, SFU students and faculty, and other friends and members of the policy community.
Ten student presenters showcased their individual and BCP group research projects:
- Kaayla Ashlie - Finding a Better Fit: Rethinking Occupancy Standards for British Columbia
- Sarah van Baarsen - A Space to Thrive: Addressing Barriers to Accessible Housing for People with Disabilities in British Columbia
- Elise Buckley - Policies to Reduce Textile Waste in Metro Vancouver
- Miranda Gariepy - Good Enough to Work, Good Enough to Stay: Addressing the impact of Canada's human capital model on permanent residency pathways for 'low-skill' temporary foreign workers
- Melissa Lappage and Emily Saint - Extreme Heat, Wildfire Smoke, and the Social Housing Sector (A group project by Kristen Belsher, Lucas Bjorgan, Tony Ho, Melissa Lappage, Emily Saint, and Belda Winata)
- Christopher Mabry - Going Nuclear: An Analysis of Canada's Small Modular Reactor Strategy to Meet Net Zero
- Erica McAdam - From Illicit to Equitable: An Evaluation of Decriminalization Models for British Columbia
- Maegan Mckay - Evaluations that 'Leave No One Behind': Decolonizing Canada's International Assistance Evaluations in Africa
- Yuliya Neverova - Addressing skilled labour shortages in biomanufacturing sector in British Columbia
Thank you to the two student co-organizers, Kaayla Ashlie and Erica McAdam, for planning this year's research showcase, and thank you to all student presenters for presenting their research. "There was such a great turnout for this event – we had students from the School of Public Policy, co-op employers, faculty, and alumni all come together to discuss this year's exciting student research projects. So grateful that we were able to host this event in person for the first time in two years," commented Erica McAdam.
We look forward to hosting the 5th annual Student Research Showcase in Spring 2023!
