Congratulations to Benjamin Aloi for winning the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences’ (FASS) annual Three-Minute Thesis competition. Aloi’s Capstone thesis titled “Enhancing consumer choice and competition in American beer markets: an analysis of vertical restraints on craft brewer entry and growth” has advanced him as FASS’ entry into the regional competition and possibly the national competition–which has been postponed for the time being. 

Aloi, a lover of craft beer was inspired to address beer distribution regulation as his Capstone topic and highlight the relationships he has built over the years working in the service industry. “As for the 3-Minute Thesis Competition, I decided to participate mainly to practice for my defence, but I hope it was at least somewhat informative and enjoyable for everyone in attendance,” says Aloi. 

The annual Three-Minute Thesis competition is open to graduate students and provides them with the opportunity to showcase their research in a condensed format. Student present their research on one slide in three minutes. Cash prizes are awarded and winning student projects are given the opportunity to advance to the regional competition and then possibly the nationals. Through this competition, students can improve their presentation skills, share their work and make connections and develop knowledge translation strategies.
