Synopsis
In this paper, a team from Google Quantum AI demonstrate experimentally that their system of superconducting qubits has the desired property that increasing the number of physical qubits improves quantum error correction. This improvement is not outweighed by the increase in the number of error sources. In my talk, I aim to provide accessible introductions to the surface code, a particular class of quantum error-correcting codes that is used in the paper, and to the key results from the authors' physical implementation.
