Synopsis
Non-linear current – voltage characteristics in electronic devices, such as diodes, have been widely implemented in audio analog circuitry, where signal clipping effects lead to the generation of harmonics that define characteristic timbres and tones in electronic instruments. These effects are most notably found in electric guitars where amplifiers involving the circuitry lead to many popular and distinctive sounds. As it turns out, molecular electronics also typically exhibit non-linear I-V behaviour due to quantum mechanical effects. The effects of these molecular devices on audio signals are discussed and compared to other popular devices, such as tube amplifiers. Furthermore, the production of such molecular devices for commercial use is also investigated and reported.
