S-4195 Gillig 4195 on Third Avenue at University St. about to cross University. Behind it is Breda 4208. What is interesting here is that 4208 is on the inside set of wires and 4195 had just passed it on the outside set of wires. This the first known use of both sets of wires since the double set of wires were constructed on this block in conjunction with the transit tunnel underneath 3rd Ave. There were plans to use dual mode trolleys on the 71, 72 and 73 after 6 p.m. when these three lines operate on the surface replacing route 70, a full time trolley route. The dual modes would use the outer wires passing the regular trolleys here. This plan was never realized. Photo by R. C. DeArmond. 8 JN 06.

S-4191 A front left side shot of Gillig 4191 on route 14 on 3rd Ave. heading for Mt. Baker. Of note here is the route number sign on the left side of the trolley. Up until a few years ago, no destination signs existed on the left side of buses in Seattle and most N. American systems. Photo by R. C. DeArmond. 8 JN 06.

S-4210 Breda 4210 on 3rd Ave. at Jefferson St. heading north to its terminus at 7th Ave. and Virginia St. It is following an unidentified trolley and passing another unidentified trolley on route 36 heading for its terminus at S. Othello St. and Beacon Way S. Photo by R. C. DeArmond. 8 JN 06.

S-4182-4169 Gillig 4162 on James St. at 4th Avenue on route 3 heading for the eastern terminus at 34th Ave. and E. Union St. Gillig 4169 is heading down James St. on route 3 heading for the northern terminus at W. Raye St. and 1st Ave. W. Photo by R. C. DeArmond. 8 JN 06.

S-4194 Gillig 4194 on 3rd Avenue on route 13 heading towards its terminus at W. Cremona St. and 3rd Ave. W. The destination sign says "Seattle Center W". Initially, the buses and trolleys displayed a split sign: the route number and destination were on the left side. The right side was often blank if there were no branch lines or it indicated the destination if there were two branches or a short turn loop. Go to Seattle Photos 12 on the photo album page also given at the bottom of Seattle Photos 14 for some pictures of this on the historical vehicles. The AMGs entered service with the new system in 1979. Since January 1978, the destination sign showed the terminus and a "via" sign indicating the main route or area the bus would go along. Some of the destination signs on the Gilligs now omit the wording "via". So this one, for example, displays "Seattle Center W" alternating with "SPC". Long time residents are probably taking this in their stride but it must be confusing the tourists and out-of-towners. Photo by R. C. DeArmond. 8 JN 06.

S-Cable A cable car heading up the Yesler Way hill at 2nd Ave. to Leschi Park. It is carrying fans to a baseball game at Dugdale Park, now long gone. The single car track to the right was on Second Ave S., later extended in a straight line to 4th Ave. S. eliminating some of the buildings visible in the picture. In the first phase, the STS phase, trolleys operated SE bound on the extension, but these wires came down in 1978. In recent years Metro installed a small block long of wires on the 2nd Ave. Extension for routes 7, 14 and 36 from 3rd Ave. to S. Jackson. The building on the corner with the white front lasted many years but was demolished not too long ago for a new building which is currently under construction. This means that almost everything and everybody in the picture are long gone. I think the taller building in the upper left hand corner is still standing. Photographer unknown. S-Alaska Drawing showing the surface section of a rebuilt Alaskan Way with streetcars in the centre over a tunnel section which would replace the Alaskan Way viaduct, which could crumble in the next major earthquake. The viaduct has been considered an eyesore since it was built more than 50 years ago. Courtesy of the Seattle Weekly. 19 AP 2006.
