ScotDep Choice of Model

The SCOTDEP Index was developed by Carstairs and Morris for analysis of Scottish Health data (Morris, 1991). The SCOTDEP Index is based strictly on census data.

The index is closely related to both the Townsend index and the Jarman index. In addition, the indices factors are also found in the Jarman index, and it has three variables in common with the Townsend Index.

However, unlike the Jarman index, the SCOTDEP incorporates un-weighted variables. As well, it lacks any type of transformation, as applied in the Townsend to adjust for skewness (IHS, 2002).
