The three constraints, as well as the six factors were used to establish suitable locations for a new hospital development in Vancouver, British Columbia. MCE allows the user to create and assess a matrix of comparisons, in order to determine the importance of each one of the factors (with respect to one another). This process was used to determine the most promising locations for a new hospital. Below is a table of my MCE results taken from the pairwise comparison matrix.

More than 50% of the weight was placed on the constraint of the “At Risk” population. This is due to the fact that children and elderly have consistently shown a pattern of increased hospital use. They are often more susceptible to infections, and associated complications. Income is another important variable in determinants of health, and in my analysis it is given secondary importance. Total population density was third highest, because with increased population density, more people are likely to require hospital services. Distance away from other hospitals, distance from Vancouver’s boundaries, and proximity to major roads combined to make up the remaining 11% of the weight. |
