FCAT Mentorship Program

The Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology (FCAT) Mentorship Program connects FCAT students and recent alumni with established community practitioners and professionals to provide additional support and guidance in preparing for life after graduation.

FCAT Mentees and mentors will partner to share experiences, discuss professional goals, and explore opportunities for future advancement and practice. The program draws on the knowledge of its mentors to inspire and motivate students and recent alumni as they prepare for community practice and career.

Why Participate?

Students

  • Gain support and guidance in preparing for career advancement and life after graduation

Mentors

  • To give back and provide input from your own lived experience

What is Involved?

Program Overview

  • After your submission is submitted, you will receive an email with a link to the online FCAT Mentorship Orientation materials with important program information.
  • After you’ve recieved the orientation materials, the FCAT Dean’s Office will review applications and look for matches between mentees and mentors.
  • Once matches have been determined, you will receive an email with an e-introduction to your mentorship partner within the next 1-2 business weeks.
  • After you have been e-introduced, you may begin communicating with your mentorship partner!

Time Commitment

  • Mentorship matches will run for a four month period with the opportunity to renew.
  • Each mentor and mentee should aim to meet once per month, for approximately 1 hour minimum.
  • Your mentorship start date will be set around the availability of both the mentor and mentee and will be shared via email.

Eligibility

For mentees:

  • Current student who has completed at least 60 credits and is active in an FCAT program; or
  • Alumnus who graduated from an FCAT program within the last two years.

For mentors:

  • Two years of professional work experience; may be an FCAT alumnus or community member with relevant experience to share.

Important note: special considerations may be reviewed and made if an applicant falls outside the eligibility requirements outlined above

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What happens after I submit my application?

  1. You will receive a link to the online FCAT Mentorship Orientation materials. The Orientation modules will provide you with important information on the program.
  2. Once you’ve reviewed all the materials, your application is complete.
  3. You will receive an update on your mentorship application within 1-2 business weeks.

How are matches decided?

  1. The FCAT Dean’s Office will review applications and look for matches between mentees and mentors.
    • Matches will be made looking for complementary professional and educational goals and experiences.
    • We will do our best, but we cannot guarantee that we can match you with a mentorship partner.
  2. Once matches have been determined, you will receive an email with an e-introduction to your mentorship partner.
    • Note: The e-introduction will be sent using the email address you used in your application.
  3. After you have been e-introduced, you may begin communicating with your mentorship partner!

When is my mentorship done?

  1. Each mentorship relationship is for a four-month period. The dates of your mentorship contact will be shared via email and are based around the availability of both the mentor and mentee.
  2. If you wish to end the mentorship early or extend the contract, please contact Kim Hockey, kha36@sfu.ca.
  3. Once your mentorship contract is concluded, you will receive a Program Evaluation Survey that will help us understand your experience so that we may continue to improve the program.

Even though your contract is completed, you may wish to reapply! We encourage you to consider continuing your participation in the program as best suits your time and interest.
