emerge anthology
Every year, The Writer's Studio and SFU Publications co-publish emerge, a showcase of the writing of students in the Writer’s Studio. For readers, emerge is an opportunity to see the latest crop of literary voices and experience new stories and poems before they appear in print in other journals and publications. In emerge you will be able to read excerpts from a student’s manuscript (in fiction and non-fiction) or read the entirety of shorter pieces of poetry and short stories.
For our students from both the online and Vancouver programs, emerge is an opportunity to experience the process of publishing and seeing their writing in print. The students of our Vancouver program have a chance to participate on the emerge production team, working with alumni and industry professionals on the book’s editing, design and production.
Many of our alumni have gone on to publish manuscripts – an excerpt from which first appeared in emerge. Readers of emerge 2006 were treated to early excerpts from Ethel Whitty’s novel The Light a Body Radiates (Caitlin Press, 2018) and John Mavin’s short story collection, Rage (Thistledown Press, 2017). emerge 2011 featured an excerpt of Janie Chang’s novel Three Souls (HarperCollins, 2013). emerge 2014 included an excerpt from Carys Cragg’s Dead Reckoning (Arsenal Pulp Press, 2017, Governor General’s Award finalist).
