Role of Assessments in Rehabilitation and Disability Management
In vocational rehabilitation and disability management, assessments can direct treatment or supply a rationale for effective case management decisions. In this course, you’ll learn about various assessment types (physical, psycho-social, vocational) and explore multidisciplinary considerations. You’ll discover how to choose a qualified assessment provider and learn how assessment outcomes affect overall decisions, including relevance at each phase of the Stage Model of Occupational Rehabilitation. You will also explore a variety of commonly used assessment tools and improve your ability to communicate assessment goals, consider diverse client needs, and navigate ethical issues when integrating assessments into a professional practice.

What you will learn
After completing this course, you’ll be able to do the following:
- Select assessment providers informed by best practices and understanding of the roles of vocational rehabilitation and disability management practitioners
- Differentiate across a range of rehabilitation and disability assessment categories: physical, psycho-social, vocational
- Identify standardized test characteristics used across various assessments
- Determine which types of assessments are relevant at each phase of the Stage Model of Occupational Rehabilitation
- Identify and justify diverse, inclusive and equitable assessment needs based on individual client variables
- Evaluate the ethical implications of vocational rehabilitation and disability management assessments to advise an appropriate course of conduct
- Recognize the role of managing stakeholder expectations in the assessment realm of the profession
How you will learn and be evaluated
- Prepare to spend 6–10 hours per week on coursework
- Expect reading and other assignments on a weekly basis
- Plan to access the course at least once every few days to keep up with your work and class discussions
- Connect with the instructor via email, online posts, and optional live Q&A Zoom sessions scheduled by the instructor (summaries/recordings available)
You will be evaluated on:
- Assignments (individual and group)
- Participation in online discussions and case scenarios
You will be evaluated on a Pass/Fail basis (minimum average grade of 75% required to pass).
