Aspects of Disability in Vocational Rehabilitation
Vocational rehabilitation includes recognizing the importance of focusing on abilities, to enhance and restore function, life and work for individuals with disabling conditions. This course will introduce you to basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, signs and symptoms of injuries and illnesses, and treatment recommendations. You’ll learn to interpret clinical characteristics, diagnostic tools, treatment recommendations and vocational considerations, including a client’s abilities, limitations and barriers. You’ll also apply appropriate strategies for accommodation and develop a vocational rehabilitation plan in collaboration with various workplace stakeholders and healthcare providers.

- Interpret clinical characteristics, diagnostic tools, treatment recommendations and vocational considerations
- Evaluate client capabilities and limitations by collaborating with workplace stakeholders and healthcare providers
- Propose individualized rehabilitation goals and accommodations to achieve successful vocational outcomes
- Recommend a vocational rehabilitation plan to mitigate prolonged work disability
- Access the most current knowledge on disabilities and impairments from various sources
- Recognize the importance of professional organizations in defining and enforcing ethical standards
How you will learn and be evaluated
- Prepare to spend 6–10 hours per week on coursework
- Expect reading and other assignments on a weekly basis
- Plan to access the course at least once every few days to keep up with your work and class discussions
- Connect with the instructor via email, online posts, and optional live Q&A Zoom sessions scheduled by the instructor (summaries/recordings available)
You will be evaluated on:
- Assignments (individual and group)
- Participation in online discussions and case scenarios
You will be evaluated on a Pass/Fail basis (minimum average grade of 75% required to pass).
