Interaction design is the essential skill set required for the successful
design of interactive products. This field takes into account equally,
the needs of the user, as well as the capabilities of emergent technology.
Projects that apply to our area of research include interaction design
projects of mobile technologies for networked audiences, theorists who
study the social dimensions of cooperation and networks, as well as
media studies scholarships that are directed at audience participation
and the shifting role of audiences and authors.
Audience Participation is best known to have culminated in the play,
Rocky Horror Picture Show. http://www.godamongdirectors.com/scripts/rhps.shtml
Later adapted to film, this one of a kind performance generated a cult
following that has yet to see its equal, and is an example of how audience
can be involved in the creation of, and continued evolution of their
own participation in the spectacle. Patterns that emerged are clear
indications of a pattern of an audience’s willingness to participate,
including the practice of booing (out loud) the villain, and cheering
for the hero. These evocative responses would be valuable to attempt
to draw out of an audience as they seem to indicate immersion in the
experience and a sense of immediacy or belonging to the performance
itself. Better yet to design a system where these responses can be mediated
or allowed to occur through the use of everyday communication tools.
