Group work
I believe in handing in assignments in pairs. This favors collaboration over competition. The idea is to build a community on the undergraduate level.
Transitioning from high school to university
No matter which social and educational circumstances a student graduates high school from, universities should take the responsibility to support students in adjusting to the new learning styles and the new "Mathematics language".
This can be effectively done with workshops and extra tutorial sessions which work on an eye level.
See here for a project I helped introducing at the Freie Universitaet Berlin to make transitioning easier.
Books
Any written material is difficult to read in the first years of study. Hence it is important that classes are designed close to an existing book or lecture notes. Getting creative here and adding some funny real life examples and comments can help readability and motivate reading.
A great example can be found here.
