The UniverCity community, atop Burnaby Mountain, has received numerous international awards for novel, forward-thinking design, including the 2010 Urban Land Institute’s Award for Excellence, the 2009 American Planning Institute’s inaugural National Planning Excellence Award for Innovation in Green Community Planning and the 2008 Best Practices in Affordable Housing award from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. This 1 hour walking tour will leave from SFU’s Burnaby campus and will give participants an opportunity to explore UniverCity at a leisurely pace. Tour groups will be guided by a UniverCity representative who will answer questions regarding the neighborhood and its future development. Those who are interested in urban planning, sustainable design, and other related issues will find this walking tour to be a valuable learning opportunity. A light lunch will be provided. Field Trip to the Seymour Watershed, Dam and Water Treatment Facility - $55 This day trip to the Seymour-Capilano watershed will give participants an insight into one of Metro Vancouver’s primary sources of drinking water. The morning will consist of a 1-1.5 hour guided walk around the Seymour watershed, reservoir and dam. Lunch will be provided before moving on to tour the recently completed Seymour-Capilano water treatment facility in the afternoon. Transportation to and from the reservoir is included in the field trip cost, as is lunch. Walking Tour of Downtown Vancouver’s Tourism Geographies - $10.00 Vancouver has undergone tremendous change over the past 20 years, attracting considerable investment and attention following the International Exposition of 1986 and surrounding the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Dr. Paul Kingsbury of SFU’s Department of Geography will lead a moderately paced 2-2.5 hour walking tour of downtown Vancouver that will focus on the city’s tourism dimensions and tourist attractions. Attention will be paid to and anecdotes offered regarding the built, natural and social environments that make Vancouver a unique tourist destination. Lunch is not included in this field trip, but a light snack will be provided. There will be many restaurants for participants to choose from following the conclusion of the tour. Participants will be provided with detailed transit instructions regarding how to return to SFU Burnaby, which is a straightforward trip from downtown Vancouver.
