Process

As per the Criminal Records Review Act, students working with children or vulnerable adults must complete a Criminal Record Check (CRC). The cost of running a CRC is $28, and the fee is non-refundable. Full instructions are available here

  1. Go to the criminal record check page on the B.C. government website.
  2. Enter the Simon Fraser University Access Code and click “Continue”. You can find the code here.
  3. Important: Do not use the back button on your browser.

  4. Confirm Simon Fraser University is listed as the Organization Name on the page. Use the job title “Practicum Student” and select “Continue”.
  5. Read the Terms of Use, and accept the terms and conditions, then click "Continue".
  6. You will now be prompted to log in with your BC Services Card (preferred method) or continue without your BC Services Card login.

It is recommended but not required that you use your BC services card for authentication. This eliminates the need for SFU to verify your identification later and will speed up the application process
  7. Please follow all the steps for identity verification and provide consent. Use your SFU email address if possible.
  8. Review your information (incorrect information may lead to another criminal record check application, which will cost an additional $28) and select “Next”.
  9. The system will ask you for a $28 credit card payment to process the criminal record check. Enter your credit card information and select “Pay Now”. Print the receipt for your records.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have previously completed a Criminal Record Check through the Ministry of Justice. How do I share it with Simon Fraser University?

You may be able to share a previous criminal record check with SFU if you have a valid check that was completed by the BC Ministry of Justice within the last 5 years for the same “works with” category.

Your previous clearance must meet the following requirements:

  • The criminal record check is schedule type B.
  • The criminal record check is for working with CHILDREN and VULNERABLE ADULTS.

Please note: We only accept shared criminal record check results that meet all of the above requirements. Failure to meet these requirements means you must request a new criminal record check through the Ministry of Justice.

If you have an eligible clearance, you can consent to share it with SFU when you apply for a criminal record check.

  1. Go to the criminal record check page on the B.C. government website.
  2. Enter the Simon Fraser University access code and the characters shown in the image. Select “Share the result of a completed criminal record check.” The Simon Fraser University access code can be found here.
  3. Important: Do not use the back button on your browser.

Note: We do not accept a paper, emailed or faxed copy of a criminal record check result done for another organization. The criminal record check must be addressed to Simon Fraser University.

I live outside of BC/I am not a BC Resident/I do not have a Valid BC Services Card. How do I request my Criminal Record Check?

It is recommended but not required that you use your BC Services card for authentication when you apply online. This eliminates the need for SFU to verify your identification later, and will speed up the application process.

If you do not have a BC Services card, you will need two pieces of government-issued photo ID (a least one with photo).  SFU will later contact you to verify your identity.

Does Simon Fraser University process Criminal Record Checks?

Simon Fraser University does not complete Criminal Record Check requests. We receive the results once they are processed by the Ministry of Justice. The link https://justice.gov.bc.ca/eCRC/ is to the Ministry of Justice's online Criminal Record Check application system. We do not have access to the information you have submitted online to the Ministry of Justice.

Do you accept Criminal Record Checks from the RCMP?

We do not accept criminal record check results from the RCMP or VPD. We can only accept the Ministry of Justice criminal record checks.

Why is there a $28 fee for a Criminal Record Check? Can this be waived?

The Ministry of Justice charges $28 for processing a criminal record search for students. Unfortunately, this fee cannot be waived.

How long does it take to get a criminal record check?  How can I check the status of my criminal record check?

If you used your BC Services Card Login, you can check the status of your criminal record check online.

Normally, criminal record checks can take up to one week to process, but could take longer if your file needs further review.
