Update/Minister's meeting - Monday, April 7, 2:45 pm

University representatives met for an hour and a half today in Victoria with the Minister of Skills Development and Labour, the Honourable Graham Bruce. A meeting between CUPE representatives and the Minister took place earlier in the day.

The Minister of Labour is now fully briefed on the impact CUPE job action is having on students and on the University's efforts to provide student access to examinations, registrarial and library services.

Job Action Update - Monday, April 7, 11:05 am

An injunction was granted in the Supreme Court of British Columbia late yesterday afternoon that prohibits illegal picket activity by striking CUPE 3338 members. The University sought the injunction after mass pickets placed illegal blockades on roadways Friday and confrontations occurred between union members, students and other university employees.

University and CUPE representatives will be meeting with the Minister of Labour today in Victoria, at the Minister's request.

The public is being advised that the University remains open and examinations are proceeding as scheduled. Where service disruptions are occurring, details are posted on this site. Students writing exams are being advised to allow extra time to get to the university given possible traffic and transit disruptions. SFU tabled an improved offer at the Labour Relations Board on April 2 and gave the union a formal invitation to return immediately to mediator-assisted bargaining on Friday. This communication was sent to the CUPE office on campus and faxed to the CUPE regional office, but the CUPE President stated today that no such communication has been received.

With respect to bargaining, the University has monetary proposals on the table. Contrary to CUPE claims, basic benefits are not being withdrawn from any current CUPE employee. A time-limited, enhanced benefit arrangement, however, is proposed to be changed into monetary improvements.

Striking Poly Party members representing building trades at SFU also received an improved offer from the university last week. Poly Party is considering the proposal and negotiations continue. The University is hopeful that a fair settlement can be reached with Poly Party through this process and believes the same is possible with CUPE.

CUPE 3338 / Poly Party Bargaining Update - April 4, 3:50 pm

The University is committed to collective bargaining and tabled an improved offer to CUPE as recently as last Wednesday. Today the University has again approached CUPE with a formal offer to return immediately to mediator-assisted negotiations.

Mediation is a process by which the parties attempt to come to an agreement with the assistance of a neutral third party. The University and CUPE were in mediation until the union asked the mediator to book out, thereby clearing the way to begin legal strike action. Although CUPE broke off mediation, negotiations continued until last Wednesday and the mediator made himself available to work with the parties.

Poly Party also received an improved offer on Wednesday and it is now under consideration. The same mediator is providing assistance to these negotiations. The University is hopeful that a fair settlement can be reached with Poly Party through this process.

The University hopes to receive a positive response from the union on the offer to seek a settlement with assistance from the mediator.

#19 Job Action Updated Friday, April 4, 4:00 pm:

CUPE pickets at Burnaby Mountain campus are disrupting traffic flow into parking lots and bus service - buses are only coming as far as South Campus road but are unable to get to bus loops. This has an impact on students attending their last day of classes, completing papers and doing lab exams.

This web site will be updated with details of affected services as they are known. Please remember to refresh/reload your web page in order to receive the most recent information.
