Avleen Kaur Sahota
Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, Minor in Counselling & Human Development | Certificate in Social Justice
How did you decide to pursue a degree in sociology? What interested you most about it?
Coming into undergrad, I intended to pursue an entirely different major; however, I quickly realized it was not for me. I took SA150 - Introduction to Sociology to try something new and immediately switched to a Sociology major. The switch felt natural to me as I have always been interested in social connection, culture, and social justice as well as the interconnections between them that shape our lives. Pursuing a degree in Sociology has helped me imagine the world from different perspectives while remaining open-minded and curious.
What was your favourite SA course? Why?
My favourite SA course was SA 321 - Social Movements, taught by Baran Fakhri. In this course, we discussed and analyzed various social movements from across the globe. It facilitated meaningful dialogue around prevalent social movements and introduced me to some I had never learned about before. This class was my favourite because it encouraged me to explore the multiple layers and intersections of social movements, what causes them, and their lasting impact. Baran fostered creativity and curiosity in the classroom, prompting engaging discussions that greatly enhanced both my learning experience and enjoyment of the course.
What’s something you’re proud of accomplishing during your time at SFU?
My time at SFU gave me the space and time to grow both professionally and personally. I am incredibly proud of the volunteer work I have done in my community throughout my undergraduate degree. The education I received at SFU has equipped me with the skills and confidence to guide and support individuals in unique and challenging situations. I am proud of the self-growth and confidence I have gained, as it enables me to apply my education in a positive and meaningful way. I would like to think that my first-year self would be proud of the person I have become over the past four years!
What are your plans post grad/what are you up to now?
I started my Master’s in Counselling Psychology in September with the end goal of becoming a Registered Clinical Counsellor.
Becoming a counsellor has been my goal since high school. My time at SFU has prepared me with invaluable knowledge and skills that will help me succeed in my post-graduate studies and career. I am very grateful and excited to be starting this next phase of my education.
I would like to express my eternal gratitude to my peers, professors, TAs, and advisor for their support during my time at SFU. Although, I am sad to be leaving SFU’s four walls of comfort, I am excited to take the lessons and memories from here to the next chapters of my life.
