The School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT), located in beautiful greater Vancouver, seeks applications for a full-time continuing teaching faculty appointment at the rank of Lecturer in Interactive Arts & Technology. SIAT is a vibrant, collaborative, interdisciplinary, and internationally recognized school integrating human-centered computing, design, and media. Our faculty members are unique in their disciplinary diversity, and we value the intersection of trans-disciplinary knowledge creation. SIAT offers degrees at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. The School currently enrolls about 800 undergraduate and 110 graduate students with a female ratio of over 50%. SIAT’s infrastructure includes innovative and collaborative teaching and teaching facilities on Simon Fraser University’s award-winning distinctive Surrey urban campus. We are a research-intensive school occupying the traditional territories of the Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw), Musqueam (xʷməθkʷə ̓yəm), Tsleil-Waututh (səlil̓ w̓ətaʔɬ), Katzie (q̓íc̓əy̓), and Kwikwetlem (kʷikʷə ̓ƛəm) peoples.
SIAT invites applications from candidates with interdisciplinary knowledge and practices in Interactive Arts & Technology who can build upon and strengthen our collaborative culture. Applicants should have a breadth of experience across media and computing that encompasses pedagogy, teaching, and practice. The ideal candidate’s teaching expertise will expand upon one or more of these areas: emergent digital media, computational creativity, affective, interactive, physical computing, design, or other emerging critical pedagogical skills in technology. We encourage applications from individuals whose teaching experience draws from multiple disciplines in which interactive arts and technology approaches are grounded within societal, ethical, and/or cultural principles. Experience with Indigenous knowledge, culture, and practices is welcomed and encouraged. This position may also provide opportunities for teaching at the graduate level in our new SIAT project-based master's program.
Applicants must hold a PhD or Master's degree with minimum of five years teaching experience in a field related to Interactive Arts & Technology with strength in technological and computational foundations. SIAT invites applications from candidates who can develop successful pedagogical collaborations with other faculty in our highly interdisciplinary environment. We seek applicants with teaching experience and a strong potential for instructional and curriculum innovation at the undergraduate level.
SIAT is a member of the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology (FCAT) at SFU. For the past seventeen years, SFU has been voted the top comprehensive university in Canada and was included in the top 20 most innovative universities worldwide for social, economic, and environmental impact in 2020. Vancouver is becoming a leader in the international tech sector, with rapidly growing employment and innovation opportunities from start-ups to global players. The region’s rich cultural, natural, and intellectual resources make it one of the world’s most desirable places to live and work.
SIAT is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community that advances safe, sustainable and humane working practices within communities and personal research and teaching practices.
Simon Fraser University is an institution whose strength is based on our shared commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion. Diversity is an underlying principle of our Strategic Vision, which pledges SFU to “foster a culture of inclusion and mutual respect, celebrating the diversity reflected among its students, faculty, staff and our community.” SFU is committed to ensuring no individual is denied access to employment opportunities for reasons unrelated to ability or qualifications. Consistent with this principle, SFU will advance the interests of underrepresented members of the work force, including Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, racialized persons and women; embrace gender and sexual diversity; ensure that equal opportunity is afforded to all who seek employment at the University; and treat all employees equitably. Candidates that belong to underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
