Michael Smith awards
Three SFU researchers—Cindy Patton, Carl Lowenberger, and Jinko Graham—have earned prestigious scholar awards from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research.
Patton, a professor of sociology and women’s studies, is developing an innovative health methods research and training facility at SFU’s Harbour Centre campus. The facility will integrate community-based research in HIV/AIDS and other public health issues with the study of health promotion in real world settings.
Lowenberger, a biological sciences professor, is studying the immune system of disease-carrying insects in an effort to learn how to prevent disease transmission.
Graham, a professor of statistics and actuarial science, is studying
complex genetic diseases such as asthma and diabetes in order to
learn the DNA sequencing variants that will lead to better treatment
and prevention.
