Overhead in Seattle coming down. Normally,
this would be a depressing photo, but in this case the overhead was coming down
in preparation for the rebuilding of the entire system which include several
conversions to etbs and a few extension.

The wires are up but the installation is not complete. This taken from across
Martin Luther King Way S. facing west. In the background is the elevated section
of the light rail line. Passengers will have to cross Rainier Ave. to reach
the Mt. Baker Station, aided by some kind of pedestrian signal. Photo

Here is a very good view of the trolley lane for the 14 and its passing wire.
The passing will be used primarily for trolleys on the 14 returned to Central
Base directly. Before, they had to return via the normal 14 wires. This will
noticeably shorten the time to get to the base. Interesting is the fact that
trolley drivers would coast down S. McClellan St. to Rainier Ave. S. where they
would hookup to the Rainier wires and continue via Rainier Ave and Jackson St.
S. 6th ave S. which led to the former Atlantic garage. After the route 7, which
used Rainier Ave S. and South Jackson St. was dieselized in 1963, the power
was turned off on Rainier Ave S. The trolleys from Mt. Baker continued to use
McClellan St. coasting to Rainier Ave. S. where they found no power in wires.
They had to very sheepishly phone central and have their trolleys towed up S.
Jackson St. which was still used by the Mt. Baker trolleys. Next year will see
70 years of trolleys on route 14/10/13 . This route was alternately marked by
various route numbers of the years, except for overhead rebuilding project of
1978/1979. Soon the wires from the Station will be connected to the wires on
S. Rainier. A new set of wires will turn from Rainier Ave. S. to McClellan St.
up the hill to 31st. Mt Baker trolleys will be able use Rainier Ave. S. to reach
Central Base legally. I understand that a southbound track will be built on
Rainier Ave. S. to permit #14 trolleys to go from Central Base in the oppose
direction to S. McClellan.

Here's a comment from Jack: "I was taking photos of bus facilities around Link stations in preparation for a council member tour next Friday. The concrete work at the Mount Baker Station bus facility is complete except for the two boarding platforms, driveways, and Rainier and MLK sidewalk replacement. A Metro Power & Facilities crew completed the overhead work inside the facility for Route 14, and will tie in to wire on MLK and Rainier in the summer. Some of the pole foundations on McClellan have been finished. Farther south, the trenching and ductwork for the Rt. 36 substation connection is about two thirds completed, but no pole foundation work has begun yet. You can see the pink survey markings for pole locations on McClellan and Myrtle/Othello. More batches of photos to follow."

concrete pad for three trolleys but they were unable to do so. Photo by Richard
