Alumni startup Moment Energy gives electric-vehicle batteries a second life

May 14, 2024

Moment Energy, a once-small startup, has swiftly evolved into a prominent player in the green tech industry.

Beginning in 2020 with just four co-founders, the company has expanded to a workforce of 40, headquartered in Coquitlam. Their success is underscored by recent achievements, including a spot on the global Cleantech 100 list and securing an $800,000 contract with Vancouver International Airport to build an energy storage system for their electric vehicle fleet.

Originally conceived by graduates of Simon Fraser University's Mechatronic Systems Engineering program, Moment Energy focuses on repurposing used EV batteries to address both environmental and grid infrastructure challenges. By purchasing batteries from automakers and transforming them into larger rechargeable energy storage systems, they offer solutions for load balancing, peak shaving, and reducing diesel generator consumption in off-grid settings.

Their systems not only support industrial and utility applications but also play a crucial role in managing stress on local electrical grids caused by simultaneous fast charging of electric vehicles. This innovative approach not only extends the lifespan of EV batteries but also paves the way for more sustainable recycling methods in the future.

With a robust pipeline of projects totaling over 35 megawatt hours, Moment Energy demonstrates a significant demand for their energy storage solutions, positioning themselves as a key player in the transition towards a cleaner and more efficient energy landscape.
