Protecting polar bears aim of new and improved radar technology
Researchers from Simon Fraser University (SFU) and Brigham Young University (BYU) have collaborated with Polar Bears International to test new technology that will more effectively locate polar bear dens across the Arctic.
With polar bears facing a decline in population and the increase industry activity in their region, there is a need for more accurate tools that can detect polar bear dens to avoid disturbing them during this ctitical time. The pilot study, located in Churchill, Manitoba uses ARTEMIS Inc., an imaging system that relies on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). This device increases den detection by more than 20 percent from the industry’s current 45 per cent accuracy to 66 per cent.
