Hypothermia is a potentially dangerous drop in body temperature. When the balance between the body's heat production and heat loss tips toward heat loss for a prolonged period, hypothermia can occur. Accidental hypothermia usually happens after cold temperature exposure without enough warm, dry clothing for protection.
A victim of severe hypothermia may display a variety of different signs and symptoms.
Classification of Hypothermia
Stage I : the patient is alert, shivering
(core temperature 35° C - 32° C)
Stage II : the patient is somnolent, not shivering
(core temperature 32° C - 28° C)
Stage III : the patient is unresponsive
(core temperature 28° C - 24° C)
Stage IV : respiratory and cardio-circulatory arrest
(core temperature 24° C - 15° C)
