Project Overview

The project is a game on a VR platform that aims to help relives pain for patients who suffer chronic pain. In the game, our team created a fantasy alien-living environment and prompted multiple living tasks for users. The goal of the game is to encourage players to discover, gather necessary material to escape from the planet. My main job in this project is to implement audio to our game, which includes finding, creating and recording sound effects, music, dialogues, to Unity. I tried both FMOD and Wwise as middleware and finally decided to use FMOD for this project. I organize my sound files to Music, Environmental Sound and SFX. Then uses FMOD to add parameters to Unity to create a dynamic sound immersive environment to players.

Sound Design of the Game

Sound is an important part of creating immersive reality. Appropriate sound feedback will allow players to better immerse themselves into the game environment. It also increases the sense of reality as well as the game experience. There are 3 kinds of sound in this game. (a. Atmosphere music to emphasize the feeling of barren for the scene. (b. Ambience sound effect (eg. wind blowing sound, water/magma flowing sound in the second scene). (c. Feedback sound effects for a player’s in-game Interaction feedback. Since the game environment takes place on an alien planet with a bad climate, the desolate and empty depressed feeling will be suitable for the game. In order to set off the atmosphere, the beginning scene uses background music that uses the ethereal bell as the instrument and played with a slower tempo. In order to highlight the feeling of other planets, a magic sound is used for the sound effect of the laser beam in the laser interaction. As well, the sound effect of teleportation is a short beeping sound.
