Workshops + Consultations

As a presenter, you're invited to take part in several workshops to prepare for your presentation. The skills you learn in these workshops can also be applied to your future research and careers.

UGRS-Led Workshops

  The UGRS is pleased to offer three workshops in the lead up to the 2024 event to support participants in preparing their presentations or posters.
 
 

Creating UGRS Conference Posters and Presentations: Communicating your Research with Style and Clarity

Date: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 - 10:00am to 12:00pm
Location: Burnaby, Bennett Library, Rm 7200

This workshop will focus on best practices for research poster layout, design, and content using the 2024 UGRS research poster template, which is a version of the #betterposter template. We will also provide tips and tricks for clear, effective, and concise research communication that will serve you in creating both posters and presentations for the 2024 Undergraduate Research Symposium.

The Construction, Flow, and Delivery of an Engaging UGRS Presentation

This workshop will offer you guidance on how to structure your short conference presentation effectively, time it perfectly, and most importantly, make it engaging from the beginning to end.

Presentation Skills for your UGRS Talk: Breath, Gesture, Posture, and Pauses

Dates: Wednesday, April 3, 2024 - 1:00pm to 3:00pm or Thursday, April 4, 2024 - 1:00pm to 3:00pm
Location: Burnaby, Bennett Library, Rm 2020, Thesis Defence Room

When presenting or speaking in public do you feel that nerves, vocal shakiness, and a lack of confidence get in the way of conveying your message? At this in-person workshop facilitated by voice specialist Sanders Whiting, you’ll learn skills to present and speak with vocal power, increased calmness, and a relaxed connection with your audience. Please bring a draft of your presentation so you can practice in a supportive environment and immediately apply and practice what you learn.

Giving Effective Online Presentations - Part 1 of 2 (June 18, 2020)
This video is the first of two videos on giving effective presentations. Here you will learn how to prepare presentations, including creating content and visuals. Focused on online presentations, but applicable to other types of presentations.

Presentation Skills (March 25, 2020) This tutorial is focused on the physicality of doing a presentation...pace, breathing, gestures/hand movement, whether to sit or stand, and more. It is a great compliment to the other series of Presentation Skills videos. Originally presented to the CMNS 432 class, the skills taught are applicable to any presentation.

All undergraduate students can sign up for writing and learning consultations with the Student Learning Commons to get feedback on presentation content and poster design.

If you are in an Honours program you can sign up for a presentation consultation from the Graduate Student Writing Team.
