Team Guardian was founded in 2010 and is SFU’s first design team, originally based at Simon Fraser University’s Surrey Campus. Our main goal is to design and build drones for UAV competitions and help companies build up their UAV systems. We have developed our own ground control station, we fly our drones autonomously, and have developed our propitiatory image processing software allowing the user to analyze and identify objects in images. Our members include students from various faculties including: SIAT, Engineering Science, Beedie, Mechatronic Systems, SOSY and CompSci.
We design and build unmanned aerial vehicles to compete competitions. Some competitions we have attended are the Unmanned Systems Canada Competition and the AUVSI Student Unmanned Aerial Competition. Our past achievements include receiving 2nd place in the 2012 Unmanned Systems Canada competition and Honourable Mention in the 2011 Unmanned Systems Canada competition.
To reach our goals, we work on various projects to introduce and learn about the various systems needed in drones. Our topics cover software, electrical, machine vision and mechanical design. No prior experience is required to join, all skills can be learned from hands-on projects to allow all students from any background to try the fields they're interested in.
We strive to be a team that provides an opportunity for students to gain experience working with unmanned aerial vehicle technology. We aim to continue past the present members, with each generation mentoring the next.
