REEL 34 COMMENTARY
1. Begins outside on decks, moves inside (1'00"). Relatively quiet rumble with something rattling.2. Begins in very loud space, moves through various vibrating spaces (1'00"), with varying intensity of low frequency vibrations. Note also parts of the boat clattering with the vibrations.
3. Very short take, recording level lowered in middle of take.
4. Meaning of words hardly discernible.
5. It screeches as it is reeled in. Position of microphone changes (1'15"), closer to wrapping sounds of sail, but also a lot more wind. Sail sounds barely audible because of boat motor, same with people's voices.
6. Starts with boat horn from harbour, then wrapping sound (0'30") and some people's voices. Again everything very much masked by boat motor.
7. Good snatches of conversation in fairly quiet ambience.
8. First blow of horn (0'41"). What a horn! And what an echo! Incredibly quiet ambience. Recordists playing around with recording levels until 1'25". Second blow distorts slightly on one channel, levels lower at 2'15". Horn blows twice in a row every minute. Incredible! Second blow begins when reverberation of first one is not finished. Tractor or boat driving by (6'10").
9. This horn has a "grunt". Reverberation of horn takes 10" to disappear.
10. High pitched horn (1'00"). Not bad, very nice, warm tone with a similarly haunting echo. Same blowing pattern as diaphone (twice every minute). It is a lot quieter, though. Note the drop to an octave below at end of blow (stylized "grunt")?). I think it is the echo that is an octave below!
11. Wind singing around corners, whistling in wires, rustling in leaves, wind gusting. Occasionally, very faintly, a distant buoy, clearly audible at 8'50". Good take.
