Happy Easter Short Film (2021)

General Information

Happy Easter is a short film that I created as a part of a team of four for an animation course. The short follows the Easter Bunny who gets an unexpected visitor on their annual day trip to lay eggs in a form of a chick that hatches in their basket. I was heavily involved in many aspects of production with including being the concept and storyboard artist for our team.

As concept artist I was tasked with creating the initial character and environmental designs to serve as a visual aid for the group to understand the direction and tone of the film.

Figures 2 and 3 depict mood board for the look of the character and world that my team and I had created during an ideation session which I then had to synthesize these mood boards into a cohesive style resulting an overall bright, whimsical, cotton candy atmosphere to the concept that can be found in both the character and environmental design, Figure 3, and Figure 4 respectively.

As the team’s storyboard artist, I was responsible with most of the cinematography of the film. The storyboarding process began with the team meeting which involved creating a rough storyboard with sticky notes, seen in Figure 5, that we could visualize and rearrange the sequences with.

During this process I was tasked with drawing most of the rough sketches of not only shots I had envisioned but also translate what my teammates were envisioning as well. Using the rough storyboard, I cleaned it up and timed it, which after consulting the team, resulted in the pitched storyboard seen in Figure 6.

The resulting film, seen in Figure 7, contains the whimsical nature of the concept art and remains relatively unchanged from the storyboard. The experience of being able to shape the look of the film and using it to create a cohesive story incredibly rewarding for this project.
