When
Dr. Lawrence Boland heads for his economics classroom at Simon Fraser
university, he goes without lecture notes, PowerPoint slides or overheads.
Instead, he goes prepared for student questions – lots of questions.
For over 20 years, Dr. Boland has used a question-based approach
to teaching. He does not deliver formal lectures. His students read
works from the extensive class reading list, and then ask questions
about the ideas. They ask him, and they ask each other. Then, like
other students, they write exams and papers. We are undertaking a
research project with Dr. Boland to explore and document this approach,
and reflect on its impact on student learning.
