Some regions of Metro Vancouver were tested for radon by Health Canada between 2009 and 2011. However, not much is known about radon levels to the North and West of the city, or about levels on the Sunshine Coast or in the Sea to Sky Corridor. It’s possible that houses in these areas could have even higher levels of radon than homes in Metro Vancouver, so it’s important that we test them.
In the Northern and Interior regions of BC, new homes are built in a way that makes it easier and more cost effective to remove radon if levels are found to be high. Our SFU Citizen Scientist project will help determine if it would be beneficial to implement these changes to new homes being built in the Coastal region as well. The changes are an inexpensive way to save both money and lives.
