Overview

Scattering is simulated using tennis balls thrown at a 3 x 4 grid of bowling balls.

Details

Equipment

  • [1] Array of bowling balls hung in a frame
  • [1] Metre stick
  • Tennis balls

Classroom Assembly

  1. Assemble the frame and mount the bowling balls in a 3 x 4 grid.

Important Notes

  • The bowling balls are heavy. Move and handle with care.

Script

  1. Throw tennis balls at the bowling balls in a random manner. Count the number of tennis balls that hit bowling balls, and the number that pass through the grid without hitting a bowling ball.

Optional:

  1. Measure the area of the frame and calculate the diameter of the bowling balls (8.5") using the scattering statistics.
