3A20.10 Mass on a Spring

Concepts

Simple harmonic motion of mass-spring system

Overview

A mass hung from a spring undergoes simple harmonic motion when displaced from its equilibrium position. Changing the quantity of the mass affects the period of oscillation of the system.

Details

Equipment

  • [1] Spring
  • [2] Lab stand
  • [1] Metal rod
  • [2] 90-degree clamp
  • [1] Hook
  • [1] 50 g hooked mass
  • Various slotted masses

Classroom Assembly

  1. Place two lab stands on the table about 70 cm apart.
  2. Attach a metal rod to both stands using 90-degree clamps.
  3. Place a hook on the metal rod.
  4. Hang the spring from the hook.

Script

  1. Hang the hooked mass from the lower end of the spring.
  2. Let the mass oscillate by displacing it from its equilibrium position.
  3. Add more mass and observe that there is a change in the period of oscillation.
