Light from a flashlight or laser pointer undergoes total internal reflection inside optical fibres and light pipes.

Classroom Assembly

  1. Put fibre optic plant on base.

Important Notes

  • Lasers can cause blindness. Use with caution.

Script

  1. Shine flashlight through various items.
  2. Shine laser pointer through various items to illustrate paths of light rays.

Technicals

  • Original construction: purchased. The straight and S-curve light pipes were made by Uchida Yoko Co. Ltd., model DP-23, cat no. 125-5601. Looks like Arbor Scientific sells something like this.
  • The 5 mW plug-in green laser works for this, though the beam is a bit broad.
