5K20.20 Eddy Current Plates
Concepts
Braking effect of induced eddy current, conductivity of metals
Overview
The motion of a solid metal plate moving in and out between the poles of a strong magnet is damped out by eddy currents. When the slotted edge of the plate is used, the braking effect of induced eddy current is greatly reduced.
Details
Equipment
- [1] Strong magnet
- [1] Aluminum plate
- [1] Copper plate
Script
- Slide the unbroken edge of the aluminum plate in and out between the poles of the magnet.
- Slide the slotted edge of the aluminum plate in and out between the poles of the magnet.
- Repeat step 1 to 2 using the copper plate.
